Heat

Is epoxy resin heat resistant?

Not very. Most table-top epoxies start to soften at about 38 to 54°C. A pan off the hob, a kettle or a mug straight from it is far hotter, and leaves a ring, a soft spot or a mark. Use trivets and mats.

The number

Where it softens

The figure that matters is the heat deflection temperature: where cured epoxy starts to soften under load. For most table-top epoxies it's about 38 to 54°C. The very high figures you see for some resins are for industrial systems cured at high heat, or for the point where the plastic breaks down, not for daily use.

Granite takes heat well. Quartz is bound with resin too, so a trivet is advised. Laminate can scorch or blister. Epoxy softens at the lowest temperature of them all. See resin vs quartz vs laminate.

One for a specialist

  • It's one pour over the whole worktop: level, edges and sink cut-outs have to be right first time.
  • It needs a warm room (24 to 30°C is ideal) for the first day, and about a week before full use.
  • Most table-top epoxies start to soften at 38 to 54°C, so it's a surface for trivets, not hot pans.

A poured epoxy worktop: about €540 to €840 a m². A resin coat over your existing worktop: about €300 to €480 a m².

How this is worked out

Anything you walk on, cook on or shower against, at any real size, is a specialist job: the preparation, the cure and the waterproofing decide whether it lasts. Small pieces are what DIY kits are made for. Experience moves a borderline job, never a shower wall or a commercial floor. Prices are our price guide; your written price comes from the specialist.

FAQ

Questions people ask

What temperature can epoxy resin take?

Most table-top epoxies start to soften at about 38 to 54°C.

Will a hot mug mark an epoxy table?

It can. Use mats and coasters.

Can heat damage be fixed?

A ring or a soft mark can be sanded back and recoated. A deep burn may need the area redone.
