Epoxy resin worktops: what do they cost?

A poured, made-to-measure epoxy worktop costs about €540 to €840 a m². A resin coat over the worktop you already have costs about €300 to €480 a m². A 3 m run of standard 600 mm worktop is 1.8 m², so about €970 to €1,510 poured.

Two jobs

Poured, or over the old one?

  • Poured and made to measure. A new worktop, cast in resin or resin and timber, in any colour or effect. The most expensive, and the most choice.
  • Resin over your existing worktop. The old laminate or timber is sanded, primed and coated. It keeps your kitchen in use for longer and costs less, but it's only as good as what's under it: a swollen or loose worktop has to be replaced first.
  • Not the same thing: factory-made solid surface worktops are acrylic resin, made in a factory and joined on site. They're sold as resin worktops too.

One for a specialist

  • It's one pour over the whole worktop: level, edges and sink cut-outs have to be right first time.
  • It needs a warm room (24 to 30°C is ideal) for the first day, and about a week before full use.
  • Most table-top epoxies start to soften at 38 to 54°C, so it's a surface for trivets, not hot pans.

How this is worked out

Anything you walk on, cook on or shower against, at any real size, is a specialist job: the preparation, the cure and the waterproofing decide whether it lasts. Small pieces are what DIY kits are made for. Experience moves a borderline job, never a shower wall or a commercial floor. Prices are our price guide; your written price comes from the specialist.

Living with one

What a resin worktop is like to live with

  • Heat. Most table-top epoxies start to soften at 38 to 54°C. Pans, kettles and slow cookers go on a trivet. See heat resistance.
  • Knives. It scratches. Use a chopping board, always.
  • Sunlight. A worktop under a south-facing window yellows faster. White and pale colours show it first. See yellowing.
  • Cleaning. Warm water and a mild washing-up liquid. No bleach, no scouring pads.
  • Life. 20 years and more with care, and a worn top can be sanded and recoated.

Food

Can you prepare food on it?

Fully cured, epoxy is a hard, inert plastic. Before that, it isn't: it needs about a week at room temperature before full use. Ask for the product used to be named in writing, with its food contact suitability. Since 20 January 2025 the EU has banned BPA in food contact varnishes and coatings. See is epoxy resin food safe.

FAQ

Questions people ask

How much is an epoxy resin countertop?

About €540 to €840 a m² for a poured, made-to-measure worktop, and about €300 to €480 a m² for a resin coat over your existing one. A 3 m run comes to about €970 to €1,510 poured.

Are resin worktops cheaper than quartz?

A coat over your old worktop (€300 to €480 a m²) is cheaper than new quartz (€425 to €650 a m²). A poured epoxy worktop (about €540 to €840 a m²) costs more than most quartz.

Can you put hot things on an epoxy worktop?

No. Most table-top epoxies soften at 38 to 54°C. Use a trivet for pans, kettles and slow cookers.

Can epoxy go over a laminate worktop?

Yes, if the laminate is sound, flat and dry. A swollen joint or a loose edge has to be fixed or replaced first.

How long until I can use the kitchen?

Light use after a day or two; full use after about a week at room temperature. The written price should say.
