Food contact
Is epoxy resin food safe?
Fully cured, epoxy is a hard, inert plastic, and some products are made for food contact. Uncured or part-cured, it isn't safe. Since 20 January 2025 the EU has banned BPA in food contact varnishes and coatings, so ask for the product's food contact suitability in writing.
Free, no obligation. One local resin specialist prices it, not five.
Cured or not
Cured and uncured
Epoxy cures by a chemical reaction. Until it's complete, the surface can still hold unreacted resin and hardener. Most table-top epoxies need about 5 to 7 days at room temperature before full use. A cold kitchen takes longer.
The law
The EU rules on BPA
Commission Regulation (EU) 2024/3190 bans bisphenol A (BPA) and other hazardous bisphenols in materials that come into contact with food, including varnishes and coatings. It applies from 20 January 2025. Repeat-use articles made under the old rules may stay on the market until 20 January 2029 at the latest.
Most epoxy resins are made from bisphenol A. So for a surface you prepare food on, ask which product is used and whether it's suitable for food contact, in writing.
In practice
Food on a resin worktop
- Wait for the full cure before food goes on it.
- Use a chopping board: knives cut the surface, and cut surfaces hold dirt.
- Hot pans on a trivet: most table-top epoxies soften at 38 to 54°C.
- Clean with warm water and mild washing-up liquid.
The DIY check
DIY or hire a pro?
Three taps: the project, the size and how much epoxy you've used. You get an honest verdict, the reasons and what a specialist charges.
Hire a pro
One for a specialist
- It's one pour over the whole worktop: level, edges and sink cut-outs have to be right first time.
- It needs a warm room (24 to 30°C is ideal) for the first day, and about a week before full use.
- Most table-top epoxies start to soften at 38 to 54°C, so it's a surface for trivets, not hot pans.
A poured epoxy worktop: about €540 to €840 a m². A resin coat over your existing worktop: about €300 to €480 a m².
Send this for a real priceHow this is worked out
Anything you walk on, cook on or shower against, at any real size, is a specialist job: the preparation, the cure and the waterproofing decide whether it lasts. Small pieces are what DIY kits are made for. Experience moves a borderline job, never a shower wall or a commercial floor. Prices are our price guide; your written price comes from the specialist.
FAQ
Questions people ask
Is cured epoxy resin toxic?
Fully cured, it's an inert plastic. The risks are from uncured resin and hardener, mainly to skin.
Can I use epoxy on a chopping board?
Not on the cutting face: knives cut it. Resin edges on a board are fine once fully cured.
Is BPA-free epoxy available?
Yes. For anything that touches food, ask for the product's food contact suitability in writing.
