Garage floors

Epoxy garage floors: cost and prep

A standard epoxy garage floor coating costs €30 to €50 a m², plus €10 to €20 a m² if the slab needs preparing, and most do. A good, thick coating lasts about 8 to 10 years. A thin one on a swept slab lifts under hot tyres.

Free, no obligation. One local resin specialist prices it, not five.

One for a specialist

  • Oil, old paint and laitance have to come off: a ground or shot-blasted slab, not a swept one.
  • Hot tyres can lift a thin or badly bonded coating.
  • A good, thick coating lasts about 8 to 10 years in a garage.

How this is worked out

Anything you walk on, cook on or shower against, at any real size, is a specialist job: the preparation, the cure and the waterproofing decide whether it lasts. Small pieces are what DIY kits are made for. Experience moves a borderline job, never a shower wall or a commercial floor. Prices are our price guide; your written price comes from the specialist.

Why they fail

Why garage coatings peel

  • Hot tyres. A tyre that's just come off the road softens a thin coating and pulls it up.
  • No preparation. Oil, old paint and the weak top skin of the concrete have to come off: ground or shot blasted.
  • Damp. Garages are often the one slab with no membrane under it. Damp pushes the coating off from below.
  • Cold. An unheated garage in winter slows the cure and leaves it soft.
